"I FOUND CRAVINGS AS A WEAKNESS...NOW I SEE THEM AS A CALL TO ATTENTION--AND DEEPER THAN JUST A FEELING OF HUNGER, BUT OF MY HEART.
JILL AND ANGELLE ARE JUST SO GOOD AT COMMUNICATING THE REALITY OF CRAVINGS...SO GRATEFUL FOR THEIR WISDOM AND THE TRUTH ABOUT CRAVINGS. PERSPECTIVE IS EVERYTHING AND MINE HAS DEFINITELY BEEN TRANSFORMED."
In part 1 and part 2 of this 4-part series on the True Causes of Cravings, you read about the nutritional and bacterial causes of cravings. Are you starting to see that your cravings are not a weakness on your part at all? They are loving messages from your body. Plain and simple. Isn't that beautiful? Today in part 3 we're talking about physical causes for your cravings.
There were so many years that we neglected self-care by medicating ourselves with fake food; staying up way too late and not sleeping nearly enough; pushing through our days when we were beyond exhausted; not exercising for weeks on end -- or over-exercising with movement we didn't enjoy -- all in name of attaining an 'ideal' body and then not giving that very body the appreciation and gratitude she needed and craved. And we paid a price with our intense sugar cravings among many other messages from our bodies.
Maybe you can relate?
And, because your body is brilliant, just like ours, when she doesn't get the physical attention she needs--sleep, movement, touch, connection, nourishment, quiet, pleasure--she will talk to you. She will spurt and sputter with aches and pains and low energy and PMS and acne and bloating and...CRAVINGS.
Physical reasons for cravings are often a call to attention, asking you to dial up self care and nourishment in your body so that you can thrive.
One of the most beautiful things about your body is that she's very forgiving. With just a bit of time and attention each day, she will respond in the most loving of ways, like with more energy, less weight, more patience, fewer aches and pains and calmer cravings. When we're talking about self-care though, this isn't about lounging hours a day at the spa or going on retreats twice a year in the name of self care (although that is a WONDERFUL idea! Book the appointment!) What we're really encouraging here is dialing into the details your daily life. Tune into your cravings to see what their messages are about the self-care your body is calling for and spend a few extra minutes a day taking better care of your physical body in a loving way.
PHYSICAL REASONS FOR YOUR CRAVINGS
Often cravings are your body’s way of telling you she needs more rest or more movement or more physical touch and connection.
Sleep is a big deal when it comes to cravings because when you aren’t getting enough sleep, whether it’s because of your daily diet or because you are up way too late on Facebook or reading a book or cleaning up the kitchen, research actually shows that the decision making areas of your brain are affected in such a way that you are more likely to choose junk food and high-calorie nutrient-deficient foods the next day. Your body will actually crave these foods and the part of your brain that might otherwise help you make a better choice, will not be on your side because of the lack of sleep from the night before. Which is why we strive to and encourage you to get to bed by 10 p.m. as often as possible because it supports your body’s natural hormonal rhythms. The hours between 10 and 2 are the most important hours of sleep for your body and this alone will often help calm your cravings a lot.
When it comes to exercise we are finding out that changes in brain activity are triggered by physical exercise. Exercise changes the way your brain processes information. In fact, exercising has been proven to lead to a significant reduction in activation in the parts of the brain that are associated with food cravings. You can actually calm your cravings by moving your body, getting your blood pumping, take in fresh air, do something you enjoy because it is helping you with your cravings.
Another physical cause of cravings can be that your body is craving touch and connection and intimacy. She might need more hugs or massage or cuddling or conversation. This can come from another person or the craving for touch can be filled by you. Do you ever take time to slowly massage a beautiful (non-toxic) lotion into your skin, appreciating all the good things about your body and expressing gratitude for what she does for you every single day? If you're like many of our clients, you rush right from the shower or bath to getting dressed, and if you do put lotion on, it's not done mindfully. Too often women are hating on their bodies instead of appreciating them.
There's one caveat to all of this information. You want to do it with self-love. If you are saying mean things to yourself about how your body looks and feels while putting on your lotion and you are exercising to punish yourself for not being 'good' enough, or connecting with a loved one holding a grudge about having to make the first move, then you aren't honoring the messages your cravings are giving to you. They aren't truly being heard and consequently, just like a child who keeps tantruming when she's not feeling heard, your cravings will do the same.
HERE'S WHY THIS IS RELEVANT TO YOUR CRAVINGS: Your body has physical needs. When you neglect those needs too frequently, she will communicate with you and one of the ways she does this is through cravings. You can calm your cravings by being responsible with your own self-care.
This quote from speaker and author Shauna Niequist that sums this up beautifully:
Bottom Line: LACK OF PHYSICAL SELF-CARE = CRAVINGS
